NAN CLINICAL RESEARCH GRANTS
The National Academy of Neuropsychology is committed to the professional and scientific development of clinical neuropsychology. The mission of the Clinical Research Grants Program is to support meritorious research which, because of its applied clinical nature, might be overlooked by traditional granting agencies.
Characteristics of Projects to be Supported
Projects will be selected on the basis of their potential to assist the practicing neuropsychologist in daily clinical work. These might include projects that:
- Produce new, clinically relevant knowledge
e.g. identification of non-cognitive factors that contaminate test findings; enhancing returns with limited batteries.
- Address perceived deficiencies in the field
e.g. effects of psychiatric disorders on neuropsychological test performance, and
- Deal with professional issues
e.g. improving collections on billings; resolving ethical problems and enhancing professional relationships in adversarial settings.
- Identifying new uses and applications of neuropsychological procedures.
e.g. application of neuropsychological testing in nontraditional settings; or web-based settings
- Target Issues of Diversity
New in 2008, NAN will be awarding a grant that is targeted in the area of diversity, broadly defined (including gender, cultural, physical/sensory disabilities and sexual orientation).
All grants will be funded for one year. Maximum awards are $15,000, with economical projects given priority consideration.
Grant Evaluation Criteria
Grant proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria.
- Research Idea: originality, importance to clinical practice
- Research Methodology: soundness of design, availability of subjects
- Ability to Complete Project: background of the principal investigator in the application area and resources to complete research
- Economy of Project: return to the profession for the number of dollars expendedAwards
Grants are awarded to neuropsychologists employed in private practice, institutional, and academic settings.
NAN board members and NAN committee chairs may not apply.
The NAN Clinical Research Grants are for one year and up to a maximum of $15,000. Only applied, clinically and professionally relevant projects are funded, and each applicant should show the potential of the proposed project to neuropsychological practice.
The deadline for 2008 applications is May 1, 2008, with funding expected to begin September 1, 2008. Information can be obtained from the NAN office.
